Consider Your Existing Conditions

When we set our sites on remodeling our home, it is usually because the existing condition of the home is confined, or out-dated. Maybe it's a poor layout and very dark.

You know, the house from the 50's or 60's that your grandmother lived in. These homes don't function well for today's lifestyle.

So in order to adapt the home to our lives, we feel compelled to change the home with a renovation. But when we own these homes, we feel that adding an addition will give us the update we're looking for.

So like a band-aid solution, we feel adding an addition will serve as a way to fix up the aliments of a house needing modernization. Sometimes, you have to look within the existing home.

Re-Work The Spaces You Already Have

Yes, there are times when a home will need more space added particularly when the home is older and space is small. But many times you need to use creative home remodeling ideas to analyze your existing space and see how you can re-work the existing foot print of your home.

You'll need to check your local municipality about zoning amendments for adding additions to your property. This "little" step can delay your planned start date and cost extra money.

Remodeling your existing footprint may help with your budget too. Re-working the existing footprint of your home is certainly more economical and certainly a greener solution.

Times Have Changed and So Has Design!

If you live in an older home, it was probably designed and built to accommodate family life in the 50's and 60's.

Those days have since gone and our lifestyles have changed. How we live in our house today is radically different that we did 40 and 50 years ago.

Finding creative home remodeling ideas to bring your home from the 50's to the new millenial is work worth doing. But if I can get you to look at the space that already exist, an update might be possible with your existing home -- without having to add more space.

Up-Dating One Space Next to Another

When you remodel one room in the house, consider how that renovation will affect the look and function of the remaining rooms in the house. Think ahead -- think about your future needs.

Over the years, I've seen this problem come up over and over. People get focused on one area of the house but fail to look at the overall plan.

Consider Your Options

Say you're gonna renovate the family room beside the kitchen but you're considering remodeling the kitchen sometime in the future. It is important that you design an overall plan for this entire space and then renovate the family room ready for the kitchen renovation in the future.

In other words, when planning creative home remodeling ideas, plan to do it all now even though you're not going to do it all right now. You'll save time, money and headache by planning ahead.
